A lifelong musician, Emily O’Brien grew up participating in community programs. Originally from Ohio, Emily studied voice performance and dance, eventually pursuing her PhD in musicology at Northwestern, where she studied radio adaptations of Hollywood musicals in the 1930s and 40s. An experienced writer and administrator, Emily has developed undergraduate programming for Northwestern’s Kaplan Institute, taught courses in music and dance history at the Bienen School of Music, and served as coordinator of the Musicology program’s weekly speaker series. Emily’s work can be found in the forthcoming Lexington Books volume Radio Art and Music: Culture, Aesthetics, Politics.
